![]() It’s been featured in TV shows through product placement and advertisements, normalizing the product. The Canadian toymaker has been smart about building associations with other trusted brands. While LEGO has a huge head start in that department, I think that the perception of Mega Construx and Bloks has been steadily improving. So now it’s down to who manages to capture the hearts and minds of the public. There have been no less than fourteen lawsuits against Mega Bloks by LEGO, and LEGO has lost every single one. Mega Bloks is now the more kid-focused division and Mega Construx is the new name to look out for if you want the adult-oriented fare. In February of 2017, Mattel split the brand. Mega Bloks/Mega Construxīy far the most serious contender for LEGO’s crown has to be Mattel’s Mega Bloks brand, which has been around since (surprisingly) 1967. Even if you never buy any LEGO-compatible brands, the legal presence of these products on the market means that LEGO has to provide better products for us in order to stay in business. It’s good for LEGO and it’s good for fans of LEGO. That may seem like bad news for Lego, but it’s good news for Lego fans who have a hard time stomaching the high price LEGO bricks can sometimes demand.īelieve it or not, competition is good for everyone. This means that Lego no longer has any legal recourse when another toy maker decides to make bricks that are compatible with Lego bricks. This patent expired in 2011 and many other Lego patents have expired before and since then. We want the more advanced pieces in the bigger piece sets.If you read my piece on the story of Lego, you may recall that the (finally) successful Lego brick design was patented in 1958. ![]() We recently bought a pull back lego car base and duplos work on it and that has been the best purchase lately. As most of the toys that are appropriate at this age are still bigger. We make some pretty intricate structures as is, but would love to do more. We only wish that there could be a duplo upgrade for older kids who still want to use duplo, where we can have some flat 2x2 or 1x1 pieces, different specials. He is a giant so the small pieces are hard for him to use. We sold off our mega blocks since they never got used. He mostly just sticks blocks on baseplates for now but he loves playing on the big kids builds. Even at 10 mo my youngest saw the other kids building and learned how to stack the blocks. They have a nice color variety and we like adding them to our duplo sets. Megablocks does make a duplo compatible version, right now they are hot wheels themes but in the past they have been disney, shimmer and shine, thomas and other. They werent stable enough, they couldnt build anything really cool. Guess this is an old tread, but just wanted to add my opinion. ![]() Its enough for both kids and 1 parent to play without dumping all out. Right now, they fill 2 20qt bins and those are a great way to divide them. We have a mix of name brand and generic and have so many already and kiddo's 3rd birthday is tuesday and i know we're getting several sets then and i need to buy another bin. I should note though that we rarely leave the kids alone with duplos, its usually a family qctuvity and its super frustrating for me when baby destroys my building, grrrr. It was a duplos day all day actually, duplos and tv since my husband is recovering from his cold right now and im deep in it. She playing with them right now while my husband does bedtime with the 3yo because i have a cold and am not feel like doing anything. We dont use megabloks anymore, but thats because we also have a 3yo and they both play with duplos together baby girl is 16mo and we haven't used megabloks since the 3yo turned 2.5.
